Children Oil Paintings A Boy with a Cat

Saturday, July 16th, 2016

A Boy with a Cat was painted by Thomas Gainsborough in 1787. The canvas had as its pendant a painting of two children, one seated and one standing, warming themselves before a cottage fire. The latter has disappeared but its composition is known from an 1809 mezzotint engraving.

The pair formed part of a group of rustic paintings of working-class children much admired in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as “fancy pictures.” Jack Hill, shown here, was a professional beggar whom Gainsborough took into his house as a model.

Boy-with-Baseball-by-George-Luks

Boy with Baseball was painted by George Luks in 1925. Having moved from Philadelphia to New York in 1896, Luks began work for the New York World, taking over as illustrator of the popular comic strip “The Yellow Kid,” which described the adventures of a band of streetwise kids on the Lower East Side. Cheerful young denizens of the slums also appear in Luks’ paintings of New York.  Famous children paintings for sale

Seeking respite from urban hurly-burly during the 1920s, Luks purchased a farmhouse in Old Chatham, New York, a rural town about 130 miles north of Manhattan. During summers there, he made portraits of some of his neighbors, including the young man who posed for Boy with Baseball.

Unlike Luks’ earlier paintings of children, which are infused with urban energy and the vitality of youth-his sitters’ and his own-Boy with Baseball is static, composed of flat patches of color applied with broad brushstrokes. It suggests the tranquility that Luks had found in his pastoral habitat. This painting can be reproduced on canvas by DayDayPaint.com. Original Dimensions: Height: 76.2 cm, Width: 63.5 cm. The-Knapp-Children-by-Samuel-Lovett-Waldo

The Knapp Children was painted by Samuel Lovett Waldo in 1833–34. The sitters are the four sons of the hide and leather merchant Shepherd Knapp (1795–1875) and his wife Catherine Louisa Kumbel (1793–1872).  Famous children paintings for sale

They are, from left to right, Gideon Lee (1821–1875), Shepherd Fordyce (1832–1886), William Kumbel (1827–1877), and Peter Kumbel (1825–1871). Shepherd Fordyce Knapp appears to be no older than two, which would date the work to 1833 or 1834.

The portrait type, among the most complex and successful painted by Waldo and Jewett, is one informed by eighteenth-century English portraiture. Waldo studied in London between 1806 and 1809 and his exposure to portraits by Benjamin West, in whose studio he was an assistant, is evident.
