Jesus Christ Painting Head of Christ

Friday, July 15th, 2016

Head of Christ was painted by Rembrandt. Rembrandt painted this subject a number of times; three examples, one described as “Een Christus tonie nae’t leven” (“a head of Christ done from life,” that is, from a model probably found in the Jewish quarter of Amsterdam), were cited in the 1656 inventory of the artist’s possessions.

Of the dozen bust-length portraits of Christ known today, only the small panel in Berlin is universally accepted, but several others are obviously the work of pupils. The present picture, which is sensitive both in conception and execution, must be either by Rembrandt or by one of his most gifted followers.

Christ Blessing the Children by Lucas Cranach the Elder

Christ-Blessing-the-Children-by-Lucas-Cranach-the-Elder

Christ Blessing the Children was painted by Lucas Cranach the Elder in mid-1540s. In a gesture of blessing, Christ places his left hand on an infant presented to him on a cushion. With his right arm he holds another child, presumably the son of the woman at the right who holds her hands in prayer. Represented together with Peter and Paul are other mothers who congregate around Christ, each holding one or more children.  Famous Jesus Paintings for sale

The subject of Christ Blessing the Children is based on the words uttered by Jesus in the Gospel of Mark (10:14), which are inscribed in German along the upper edge: “Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for such is the kingdom of God.” It was apparently not featured in the history of panel painting before Lucas Cranach the Elder. Cranach and his workshop treated the theme at least sixteen times at least three for the patron John Frederick the Magnanimous, elector of Saxony.

One reason for this sudden appearance and proliferation was Martin Luther’s interpretation of the Gospel passage as divine authorization of infant baptism, as opposed to the doctrine of adult baptism espoused by the Anabaptists, a Protestant sect then considered heretical by Luther and the elector of Saxony. Jesus Christ Paintings Christ Asleep during the Tempest

Eugene Delacroix Christ Asleep during the Tempest

Christ Asleep during the Tempest was painted by Eugene Delacroix in 1853. When one of the versions of Christ Asleep during the Tempest was shown in the 1864 Delacroix memorial exhibition, a critic described it as “one of the subjects that Delacroix has caressed most . . . . Everything seduces him in this episode, the whipped-up water, the sky black with storms, the sails torn by the wind, the terror of the sailors, and, above all that, the sweet sleep of the Saviour in the midst of the revolt of nature.” Jesus paintings for sale

Delacroix painted fourteen variations of this New Testament lesson in faith: when awakened by his terrified disciples, Christ scolded them for their lack of trust in Providence. In the earlier works, the seascape is more prominent; in the later ones, as here, Christ’s bark occupies a more significant place. buy jesus paintings online

After Vincent van Gogh saw this version in Paris in 1886, he wrote, “The ‘Christ in the Boat’ I am speaking here of the sketch in blue and green with touches of violet, red and a little citron-yellow for the nimbus, the halo speaks a symbolic language through color alone.” This painting can be reproduced by Daydaypaint.com. Christ Paintings Christ Carrying the Cross

Christ Carrying the Cross was painted by El Greco in 1850. During his long career in Spain, El Greco produced numerous paintings of Christ Carrying the Cross. The Lehman canvas, arguably his earliest version of the subject, is not a narrative scene: no other figures are represented and the setting is not recognizable.  Jesus paintings sale

Instead, it is a devotional image of haunting immediacy, resonant with pathos. Christ’s willing sacrifice for humankind is expressed through his gentle embrace of the cross and his heavenward gaze. Jesus Christ Paintings Christ Healing the Paralytic

Famous Jesus Paintings Christ Healing the Paralytic was painted by Sir Anthony van Dyck in 1619. This is the work of a supremely brilliant 20-year-old Van Dyck working in Rubens’s studio and very possibly executing a Rubens design, under the supervision of the elder master. This compositional type – an intense, spectator-jostling drama where the canvas area is barely able to contain a small number of half-length figures – was invented by Caravaggio (1571-1610). The type was frequently copied by Italian and Netherlandish artists during the first two decades of the seventeenth century. Caravaggio also invented the idea of divine, classically dressed figures rubbing shoulders with the meanest member of the modern street. Famous religious paintings of jesus SALE

This encounter has here been rendered more acceptable by basing the paralytic on an antique statue, then thought to depict the death of Seneca and recorded by Rubens in a series of drawings – one of which (when reversed) provides the precise model for this figure. The man is clearly a wretch: he has the bodily imperfections – rounded back, gnarled muscle forms, prominent veins and mean physiognomy – which contemporaries would have read as the outwards signs of an unfortunate and a sinner. Yet at least his wretchedness is expressed in the language of classical antiquity. He makes an obvious contrast with the nobility of the Apostle to the right, who could be based on one of a variety of classical busts familiar to anyone working in Rubens’s studio. In this intense drama Van Dyck (or more probably Rubens) expresses the way in which St Matthew’s Gospel describes a calling as well as a healing. It immediately precedes the calling of Matthew himself. Christ sees the faith of those attending the paralytic and outrages some Pharisees by first telling him that his sins are forgiven him. This, he says, is more difficult than the simple task of healing, which is then duly accomplished. In this powerful image Christ draws the man up from his knees, and ushers him from out of darkness into the light, in an interaction similar to depictions of the Harrowing of Hell. The Apostle here is most likely to be the recently called St James, the pilgrim saint; all three characters in the drama seem to be setting off on a pilgrimage. Jesus-Christ-Paintings-Christ-and-the-Centurion

Famous Jesus Paintings Christ and the Centurion was painted by Paolo Veronese. Paolo Veronese (1528-1588) was an Italian painter and draughtsman who, along with Titian and Tintoretto, was one of the greatest painters of the late Renaissance in Venice. He is known as a supreme colourist and for his illusionistic decorations in both fresco and oil. His large paintings of biblical feasts executed for the refectories of monasteries in Venice and Verona are especially celebrated. He also produced many altarpieces, history and mythological paintings and portraits. Many of his compositional sketches in pen, ink and wash, figure studies in chalk are preserved and he headed a family workshop that remained active after his death.  jesus christ paintings sale online

This canvas appears to be a reduced copy of a work by Veronese now in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich (no. 1139). The scene depicts an account in Matthew 8:5-13 in which Christ heals the Centurion’s servant. In Capernaum, a Roman centurion came to Christ to beg him to cure his servant-boy who lay at home very sick. When Christ offered to come to the centurion’s home, he, as a measure of his faith, said ‘you need only say the word and the boy will be cured.’ And so it came about. Veronese and his workshop produced several different interpretations of the subject including works now in Munich, Dresden, and Madrid. There is also a 1763 engraving after the Prado version by P. Monaco. This painting can be reproduced by Daydaypaint.com. Original Dimensions: Height: 38 cm, Width: 69.5 cm. Jesus Paintings The Infant Christ Asleep on the Cross was painted by Bartolomé Estebán Murillo in 1858. Bartolomé Estebán Murillo (1617/18-1682) was born in Seville where he probably trained in the studio of Juan del Castillo (ca.1590-ca.1657). He received many commissions and worked especially for the religious orders but was also a renowned portrait painter. He may have undertaken a journey to Madrid where he could have met Diego Velazquez (1599-1660) however this cannot be confirmed. He died a few months after he fell from the scaffoldings in the church of the Capuchines in Cádiz, whilst still painting the main altarpiece. jesus christ paintings for sale

This painting shows a naked child wrapped into a cloak is lying on a cross, his arm resting on a skull beside him; two angels hovering over him and in the background a mountain and a city. It is a reduced copy after Murillo’s The Infant Christ Asleep on the Cross, currently housed in the City Art Galleries, Sheffield. It shows the child Christ asleep on the cross, his arm resting on a skull lying beside him, both attributes alluding to his forthcoming sacrifice, while the two angels hovering over him echo his divine origins. Paintings representing the Child asleep were a popular subject in mid-17th century Spain as it combines the religious devotion with the depiction of childhood. Jesus Paintings The Descent from the Cross was painted by Charles Le Brun. Charles Le Brun (1619-1690) was born in Paris and soon achieved a great success becoming the court painter of Louis XIV. He trained with François Perrier (1594-1649) and then collaborated with Simon Vouet (1590-1649) during the mid 1630s. He made a decisive trip for his artistic development to Italy with Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) in 1642 and returned to Paris only three years later. He then became quickly very successful and produced many history and religious paintings as well as designs for the royal palaces.  Famous jesus paintings sale

This painting shows Lowering of Jesus from the cross by four men, a Roman soldier on the left hand-side and the Virgin Mary with Mary Magdalen on the right hand-side with other three mourning figures. It is a fine example of Charles Le Brun’s Baroque style who dominated 17th-century French painting. It shows the Descent from the Cross of Christ’s body by Nicodemus and St John the Evangelist while a group of mourning women gathered around the feinted Virgin Mary. This austere composition is pervaded with dramatic intensity enhanced by touches of vivid colours against the dark background. This work, of which several versions are known, was particularly popular and inspired the next generation of artists. This painting can be reproduced by Daydaypaint.com.
