The Goddess of Discord Choosing the Apple of Contention in the Garden of the Hesperides

The Goddess of Discord Choosing the Apple of Contention in the Garden of the Hesperides was painted by Joseph Mallord William Turner in 1806. The Hesperides were the three daughters of Hesperus, the evening star. They tended a tree of golden apples on the slopes of Mount Atlas. Here, the goddess Discord picks one, setting in train the events leading to the Trojan war. Landscape paintings for sale

The apple was subsequently awarded to the goddess Aphrodite by Paris, after she had promised him the most beautiful woman in the world: the Greek Queen, Helen, wife of Menelaus, whom Paris then abducted. It seems Turner may have been alluding to recent in-fighting at the Royal Academy in his choice of subject. This painting can be reproduced on canvas by Daydaypaint.com. Snow Storm Hannibal and his Army Crossing the Alps Painting by Joseph Mallord William Turner

Snow Storm: Hannibal and his Army Crossing the Alps was painted by Joseph Mallord William Turner in 1812. For Turner, the figure of Hannibal – here leading his armies to attack Italy -had powerful associations with Napoleon. These connections had been explicitly drawn in an official portrait of Napoleon about to lead his own armies across the St Bernard Pass.  Buy famous landscape paintings online

Snow Storm, however, does not celebrate the power of the individual, but expresses man’s vulnerability in the face of nature’s overwhelming force. Hannibal himself is not pictured, and attention is focused upon victims of the conflict, the struggling soldiers. This painting can be reproduced on canvas by Daydaypaint.com. The Deluge Painting by Joseph Mallord William Turner

The Deluge was painted by Joseph Mallord William Turner in 1805. The Bible was a prime source of subjects that were both sensational and intellectually elevated. A critic commenting on this painting of the Biblical flood admired ‘that severity of manner which was demanded by the awfulness of the subject’. Turner does seem to be referring to the ‘severe’ style of the 17th-century French artist Nicolas Poussin. Buy famous landscape paintings online

He also connected the picture to the poetry of John Milton, the most severely Sublime of poets. Turner became an important model for younger artists of the apocalyptic Sublime, notably John Martin and Francis Danby. This painting can be reproduced on canvas by Daydaypaint.com. Buttermere Lake with Part of Cromackwater Cumberland a Shower Painting by Joseph Mallord William Turner

Buttermere Lake, with Part of Cromackwater, Cumberland, a Shower was painted by Joseph Mallord William Turner in 1798. This Lake District scene was shown at the Royal Academy in 1798 along with several other North of England subjects, following Turner’s first tour of the region the previous year.  Buy landscape paintings online

It is based on a sketchbook study worked up in watercolour to show the stormy conditions he presumably witnessed, writing ‘Black’ on the surface of the lake. This was his cue for the mood of this dramatic painting, enlivened by the rainbow which would become a frequent motif. Turner is making a consciously ‘Sublime’ statement, intended to evoke the viewer’s awe at the grandeur of Nature. This painting can be reproduced on canvas by Daydaypaint.com. Snow Storm Steam Boat off a Harbour's Mouth Painting by Joseph Mallord William Turner

Snow Storm – Steam-Boat off a Harbour’s Mouth was painted by Joseph Mallord William Turner in 1798. Turner painted many pictures exploring the effects of an elemental vortex. Here, there is a steam-boat at the heart of the vortex. In this context the vessel can be interpreted as a symbol of mankind’s futile efforts to combat the forces of nature. . It is famously said that Turner conceived this image while lashed to the mast of a ship during an actual storm at sea. This seems to be nothing more than fiction, but the story has endured as a way of demonstrating Turner’s full-blooded engagement with the world around him. Van Goyen Looking Out for a Subject Painting by Joseph Mallord William Turner

Van Goyen, Looking Out for a Subject was painted by Joseph Mallord William Turner in 1833. The figure wearing a turban in the foreground boat is presumed to be the Dutch seascape painter Jan van Goyen, who was known to have sought suitable subjects for his paintings from an open boat off Antwerp. Turner’s inscription of the letters VAN G on the stern of the boat further suggests the figure’s identity as van Goyen. Boat paintings for sale

Both Turner and van Goyen visited Antwerp and spent time sketching impressions of the city. Here the choppy waters of the Scheldt River are streaked with white foam, and the viewer can discern the port city buildings and the towers of Antwerp Cathedral across the river. The Shipwreck Painting by Joseph Mallord William Turner

The Shipwreck was painted by Joseph Mallord William Turner in 1805. Shipwrecks and other disasters at sea were a recurrent theme in Romantic painting. They demonstrated the primal force of the elements, a nightmare for all who travelled far from home. Turner retained a lifelong passion for the sea. Famous seascape paintings for sale

We don’t know whether this painting was inspired by an actual shipwreck, or the reissue in 1804 of a famous poem on the theme by William Falconer. Turner defines the essence of such an experience through overwhelming impressions of realism and horror. The dark tonality, characteristic of Turner’s early paintings, provides a foil to the white crests and swirls of the waves. This painting can be reproduced on canvas by Daydaypaint.com. Regulus Painting by Joseph Mallord William Turner

Regulus was painted by Joseph Mallord William Turner in 1828. Regulus was a Roman general who was captured by the Carthaginians. They sent him back to Rome to negotiate the release of Carthaginian prisoners. When he returned to Carthage, having failed his mission, he was punished by having his eyelids removed. Turner’s blinding, light-filled canvas makes manifest Regulus’s plight. buy famous reproduction paintings online

Turner first exhibited this painting in Rome in 1828. His audience would have recognised its echoes of a famous seaport by the seventeenth-century painter, Claude Lorrain, in the Uffizzi gallery in Florence. Turner clearly wanted to show himself as heir to the tradition of landscape painting begun by Claude. This painting can be reproduced on canvas by Daydaypaint.com.
