Venice Paintings Venice from the Porch of Madonna della Salute

Venice, from the Porch of Madonna della Salute was painted by Joseph Mallord William Turner in 1835. This painting, which is based in part on a sketch executed in August 1819 during Turner’s first trip to Venice, combines two viewpoints along the Grand Canal. Those on the right are seen from a vague position across the canal, approximately 100 yards farther back, near the Campo del Traghetto of Santa Maria del Giglio. The painting is less a response to the city itself, than an act of homage to the greatest painter of Venice, Antonio Canaletto, who had lived in the early part of the previous century. Venice Oil Paintings Distant View of Venice was painted by Karl Heffner in 1880. Karl Heffner (1849-1925) was born in Würzburg where he first studied music. He was a pupil of Adolf Stademann (1824-1895) and Adolf Heinrich Lier (1826-1882) in Munich. He travelled extensively in Germany, England, Italy and Holland, exhibited in Vienna and Munich between 1873 and 1883, and in the Royal Academy in London between 1880 and 1881. Heffner was one of the greatest exponents of the Munich School of Paintings led by A. Stademan and A. G. Lier who were his masters. This painting shows a distant view of Venice across a lagoon, with a sailboat in the middle ground. It is part of group of six famous Italian views mounted together and depicts a seascape with sailing boats in Venice. In the background one can recognise the Punta della Dogana with Santa Maria della Salute’s dome, the high tower on San Marco square and the beginning of Riva degli Schiavoni on the far right. Although his first trip to Italy is recorded in 1883, the present sketch is dated 1880. Following the Realist technique, this work was probably executed directly after the motif in open air. It work is a fine example of Heffner’s mature manner, which became broader and sketchier over the years. This painting can be reproduced by Daydaypaint.com. Michele Marieschi (1696-1743) was born in Venice and specialised in vedute and capriccio paintings. He trained his own son Jacopo (1711-1791) and taught Francesco Albotto (ca. 1723-1758). This painting shows across the Grand Canal a view of the church S. Simeone Piccolo in Venice. On the Canal lower right is a boat with an awning while the rest of it is dotted with a few gondolas. The brushwork recalls the influence of major vedute painters of the time including Canaletto and Francesco Guardi even though dominate some essential characteristic of Marieschi’s art. The thick impasto and somehow neat handling of the paint indicate this work was probably made at the end of the 18th century. This painting can be reproduced by Daydaypaint.com.
