Oil Paintings A Priestess of Apollo

A Priestess of Apollo

A Priestess of Apollo was painted by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema in 1888. In Roman mythology, Apollo was the sun god who lived in Mount Olympus, and who, in the guise of the sun, rode his chariot drawn by four horses across the sky each day. In this painting one of the priestesses stands barefoot inside the temple of Apollo looking up towards the sky, perhaps awaiting Apollo’s return in the evening. She wears a spectacular leopard skin tunic, and has a wreath of ivy in her air. These symbolic ornaments, as well as her business in serving wine, suggest her licentious behaviour in the temple.

The subject matter is unusual for Alma-Tadema who, from the 1880s onwards, generally painted the ‘happy, inconsequential everyday incidents in the lives of anonymous though well-to-do inhabitants of Rome or Pompeii’ (Becker, p.11). Alma-Tadema had first travelled to Italy in 1863, visiting the ancient archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. He revisited several times taking photographs of architectural details and artefacts which were used as reference material for his paintings when he returned to England. oil painting reproductions sale

The golden jug that the priestess is holding and the large silver urn may have been amongst the recently excavated objects. The inclusion of the ‘latest archaeological discoveries enhanced the sense of immediacy, for spectators who would recognize the artefacts’ (Becker, p.36). Alma-Tadema’s 167 albums of photographs are now housed at the University of Birmingham. At the time A Priestess of Apollo was painted, Alma-Tadema had risen to prominence in the London art world and had begun to entertain on a lavish scale at his large house in Grove End Road, St Johns Wood. He was knighted in 1899 and awarded the OM in 1907. This painting can be reproduced on canvas by Daydaypaint.com. Original Dimensions: Height: 34.9 cm, Width: 29.8 cm. Oil Paintings Blindman's Buff

Blindman’s Buff was painted by Komar and Melamid in 1982–83. Vitaly Komar and Aleksandr Melamid first met in 1963 as students at the Stroganov Institute of Art and Design in Moscow. They began collaborating in 1965, while still students, in a lecture and performance on the history of Russian art. After graduating, they participated in several avant-garde exhibitions, and were eventually expelled from the Moscow Union of Artists. They emigrated to Israel in 1977 and a year later moved to New York, where they continued to work together in a variety of media, from painting and sculpture to performance pieces, installation art, and posters for public display. They became American citizens in 1988, and their art continued to critique the totalitarian regime under which they had formerly lived. Oil Painting Reproductions for sale

From 1980 to 1983, Komar and Melamid painted more than two dozen canvases called the “Nostalgic Socialist Realism” series. Socialist Realism was the prescribed method for the official art of the Soviet Union, promoting an academic style and imagery that idealized the everyday life of the proletariat and glorified the dictator Joseph Stalin. In their parodies of Socialist Realism, which played on the subjects and styles of official art, Komar and Melamid made ironic commentaries on the propaganda of Communism. Blindman’s Buff is a domestic scene depicting two people playing the traditional party game of the title: a schoolgirl is blindfolded, trying to find and catch the man in military uniform who crouches behind the table. Although the subject is ostensibly lighthearted, the drab colors and emptiness of the room, overshadowed by a portrait of Stalin prominently displayed on the wall, give the scene a somber atmosphere. The stark lighting and billowing drapery of the curtain recall the formal excesses of seventeenth-century Baroque painting, in which saints regularly received visions and witnessed miracles. Here, however, the young heroine can see neither her companion nor the light from the window. This painting can be reproduced by Daydaypaint.com. Oil Paintings Windy Day at Brighton

Windy Day at Brighton was painted by Charles Conder in 1904-5. Conder was a student in Paris in the 1890s, and remained an Anglo-French painter, spending time equally in London and Paris. He liked to paint the coast of the English Channel, as if en route for Calais or Dieppe. In this view of the Front at Brighton the tall man at the right is said to be the painter Sickert, who also worked in both London and Paris, and who was one of those who brought Impressionism to Britain. buy reproduction paintings online

In some of his work Conder nostalgically revived French eighteenth-century amorous subjects, and often painted watercolours on silk fans. The schoolgirl here who flies a kite, isolated in summer clothes when everyone else wears coats, is similarly a reminder of the fragility of youth. This painting can be reproduced by Daydaypaint.com. Oil Paintings Spring by the Sea

Spring by the Sea was painted by Charles Conder in 1905. Conder was trained in Australia and Paris, before returning to his native London. He liked to paint the South Coast, sometimes making views of a real place, and at other times, as in this painting, inventing an imaginary reminiscence of a place. The background and atmosphere look like Swanage in Dorset, where Conder often stayed.  buy reproduction paintings online

The figures and the flowering cherry trees in the foreground are a fantasy, and an evocation of ‘Spring’. In sprawling half naked, brandishing a mirror and wearing imaginary cloaks, these girls recall the eighteenth-century fantasies of Watteau. They also correspond to the melancholy mood of the novels of Marcel Proust, one of which is centred on a ‘little band’ of young girls on holiday by the sea. This painting depicts Lytton Strachey (1880-1932), the biographer and essayist, who was a central figure in the Bloomsbury circle. It contains three portraits of Strachey at different ages, including a very young portrait as a cabbage. There are several references to Strachey’s homosexuality (the ‘pansy’ patterned wallpaper), as well as clues to the subjects of his books. buy oil paintings online

The arrow heads combined with a strand of his beard form two profiles against the target. One is of Queen Elizabeth I, the other Queen Victoria. The painting’s title alludes to the situation Strachey would have found himself in had either book been published during the lifetime of the subject.
