Children Oil Paintings A Boy with a Cat

Saturday, July 16th, 2016

A Boy with a Cat was painted by Thomas Gainsborough in 1787. The canvas had as its pendant a painting of two children, one seated and one standing, warming themselves before a cottage fire. The latter has disappeared but its composition is known from an 1809 mezzotint engraving.

The pair formed part of a group of rustic paintings of working-class children much admired in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as “fancy pictures.” Jack Hill, shown here, was a professional beggar whom Gainsborough took into his house as a model.

The Knapp Children was painted by Samuel Lovett Waldo in 1833–34. The sitters are the four sons of the hide and leather merchant Shepherd Knapp (1795–1875) and his wife Catherine Louisa Kumbel (1793–1872).  Famous children paintings for sale

They are, from left to right, Gideon Lee (1821–1875), Shepherd Fordyce (1832–1886), William Kumbel (1827–1877), and Peter Kumbel (1825–1871). Shepherd Fordyce Knapp appears to be no older than two, which would date the work to 1833 or 1834.

The portrait type, among the most complex and successful painted by Waldo and Jewett, is one informed by eighteenth-century English portraiture. Waldo studied in London between 1806 and 1809 and his exposure to portraits by Benjamin West, in whose studio he was an assistant, is evident. Childrens Paintings Rustic Civility

Famous Children’s Painting Rustic Civility was painted by William Collins in 1833. Oil paintings with sentimental scenes of children in the countryside became popular with collectors such as John Sheepshanks and the Rev. Chauncy Hare Townshend, as well as with the Victorian public in general. William Collins trained at the Royal Academy and went on to become a popular painter of landscapes and rustic genre scenes. children’s painting supplies

He travelled extensively in Britain and abroad, particularly in Italy, and these journeys are reflected in the subjects of his pictures. He was particularly fond of representing children. Here the combination of his fine technique and the agreeable nature of the subject in this painting appealed to a wide public, connoisseurs and amateurs alike.

One of the artist’s most famous works, and one of the best-known British paintings of the nineteenth-century. The sixth duke of Devonshire had bought an earlier version, which is still at Chatsworth, and in his guidebook of 1845, he wrote: ‘People are amused at having to find out what is coming through the gate, which few do, till the shadow on the ground is pointed out to them’. The duke recognized the lasting appeal of the painting; its charm and popularity is indeed due to the way the two village children, one ‘touching his forelock’ in deference (as he does not own a hat he can raise), have opened the gate. They gaze, presumably hoping for a coin in reward, at the approaching gentleman on horseback, whose shadow only is included in the painting, while the smallest child looks directly out at us.
