Jesus Christ Painting Head of Christ

Friday, July 15th, 2016

Head of Christ was painted by Rembrandt. Rembrandt painted this subject a number of times; three examples, one described as “Een Christus tonie nae’t leven” (“a head of Christ done from life,” that is, from a model probably found in the Jewish quarter of Amsterdam), were cited in the 1656 inventory of the artist’s possessions.

Of the dozen bust-length portraits of Christ known today, only the small panel in Berlin is universally accepted, but several others are obviously the work of pupils. The present picture, which is sensitive both in conception and execution, must be either by Rembrandt or by one of his most gifted followers.

Religious Paintings The Lamentation

Friday, July 15th, 2016

The Lamentation was painted by Scipione Pulzone in 1593. This altarpiece was painted for the chapel of the Passion of Christ in the church of the Gesu, in Rome, the headquarters of the Jesuit order. Its style was intended to complement the austere interior space of the church.

Pulzone’s canvas is conceived not as a narrative but as a meditation on the Entombment of Christ, in line with Ignatius Loyola’s Spiritual Exercises. Details such as the tears of the Virgin, the crown of thorns held by Saint John, and the pallor of Christ’s body are presented to the viewer for contemplation. Pulzone’s brand of realism made him an important exponent of Counter Reformation art.

Christ Blessing the Children by Lucas Cranach the Elder

Christ-Blessing-the-Children-by-Lucas-Cranach-the-Elder

Christ Blessing the Children was painted by Lucas Cranach the Elder in mid-1540s. In a gesture of blessing, Christ places his left hand on an infant presented to him on a cushion. With his right arm he holds another child, presumably the son of the woman at the right who holds her hands in prayer. Represented together with Peter and Paul are other mothers who congregate around Christ, each holding one or more children.  Famous Jesus Paintings for sale

The subject of Christ Blessing the Children is based on the words uttered by Jesus in the Gospel of Mark (10:14), which are inscribed in German along the upper edge: “Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for such is the kingdom of God.” It was apparently not featured in the history of panel painting before Lucas Cranach the Elder. Cranach and his workshop treated the theme at least sixteen times at least three for the patron John Frederick the Magnanimous, elector of Saxony.

One reason for this sudden appearance and proliferation was Martin Luther’s interpretation of the Gospel passage as divine authorization of infant baptism, as opposed to the doctrine of adult baptism espoused by the Anabaptists, a Protestant sect then considered heretical by Luther and the elector of Saxony. Jesus Christ Paintings Christ Asleep during the Tempest

Eugene Delacroix Christ Asleep during the Tempest

Christ Asleep during the Tempest was painted by Eugene Delacroix in 1853. When one of the versions of Christ Asleep during the Tempest was shown in the 1864 Delacroix memorial exhibition, a critic described it as “one of the subjects that Delacroix has caressed most . . . . Everything seduces him in this episode, the whipped-up water, the sky black with storms, the sails torn by the wind, the terror of the sailors, and, above all that, the sweet sleep of the Saviour in the midst of the revolt of nature.” Jesus paintings for sale

Delacroix painted fourteen variations of this New Testament lesson in faith: when awakened by his terrified disciples, Christ scolded them for their lack of trust in Providence. In the earlier works, the seascape is more prominent; in the later ones, as here, Christ’s bark occupies a more significant place. buy jesus paintings online

After Vincent van Gogh saw this version in Paris in 1886, he wrote, “The ‘Christ in the Boat’ I am speaking here of the sketch in blue and green with touches of violet, red and a little citron-yellow for the nimbus, the halo speaks a symbolic language through color alone.” This painting can be reproduced by Daydaypaint.com.
