Classical Painting Maria Luisa of Parma Later Queen of Spain

Saturday, July 16th, 2016

Maria Luisa of Parma, Later Queen of Spain was painted by Laurent Pecheux in 1765. This portrait, whose commission is recorded in great detail in the artist’s autobiography, was for the family of her fiance, the Prince of Asturias, later King Charles IV of Spain (1748–1819).

Maria Luisa, who was the granddaughter of both Philip V of Spain (1683–1746) and Louis XV of France (1710–1774), is depicted here in striped floral brocade. The decoration of the Hapsburg order of the Croix-Etoilee, which she wore all her life, is pinned to her dress and she holds a snuffbox with a miniature of her future husband in her right hand.

The furniture in this affluent interior has often been identified as that ordered in Paris by her mother, Madame Louise Elisabeth de France (1727–1759), for the Palazzo Ducale in Parma. This painting can be reproduced on canvas by MuseumArtPaintings.com. Original Dimensions: Height: 230.8 cm, Width: 164.5 cm. Taking the Census by Francis William Edmonds

Taking-the-Census-by-Francis-William-Edmonds

Taking the Census was painted by Francis William Edmonds in 1854. The United States Census of 1850 was the first such survey in this country to require that heads of households provide information on their dependents. The process of interrogation caused a good deal of confusion and inspired numerous jokes. famous classical paintings for sale

Francis William Edmonds’s amusing portrayal features a father making a painstaking effort (counting on his fingers) to give the white-bearded census taker his family statistics, while his giggling children hide from sight. A reviewer who saw the picture at the national Academy of Design exhibition in 1854 described the main character as a “farmer, rough and awkward, reckoning in brown study the number of the boys and girls, evidently more at home in the use of the ox-gad, which lies on the floor, than in figuring.”

The small portrait print of George Washington just above the father’s head evokes not only the genesis of the country’s democratic political system but also the by then legendary admonition never to tell a lie. With its carefully delineated interior based on prototypes from Dutch genre scenes, the composition reveals Edmonds at his finest, taking a common moment from the daily life of middle-class Americans and turning it into a moralizing and socially critical tableau. John and Louisa Stock by Joseph Whiting Stock

John-and-Louisa-Stock-by-Joseph-Whiting-Stock

John and Louisa Stock was painted by Joseph Whiting Stock in 1845.  The children are thought to be those of the artist’s younger brother Isaac C. Stock and his wife Sarah Hunt Stock of Springfield, Massachusetts. The 1850 census for that city gives the ages of John (born ca. 1838) and Louisa (born ca. 1840), who, it can be deduced, would have been seven and five, respectively, when this work was painted. famous classical paintings for sale

The family moved between Springfield and Boston before settling in New Haven in 1852. Little is known of the children, other than that John was listed intermittently in the city directories as a messenger for Adams Express, a baker, and a clerk. Stock’s meticulous attention to decorative pattern and detail make the work a document of nineteenth-century dress and furnishings.

His somewhat awkward, untutored drawing is compensated for by his appealing characterization of the sitters. This painting can be reproduced on canvas by DayDayPaint.com. Original Dimensions: Height: 127.6 cm, Width: 101.6 cm. Other sizes and custom sizes are available, if you are interested, please contact us at email: daydaypaint@gmail.com.
