The Loves of Paris and Helen Painting by Jacques Louis David

The Loves of Paris and Helen was painted by Jacques Louis David in 1788. David exhibited at the Salon of 1789 The Loves of Paris and Helen, an important private work for the Count d’Artois, the king’s dissolute brother. David had begun work on the painting in 1786, but, due to a long illness it was not completed until 1788.  buy famous paintings online

The Loves of Paris and Helen was a work on a new theme, and to express the amorous nature of the subject, David greatly modified the uncompromising and severe style of his previous paintings: the two figures are smooth and sculptural and are bathed in subtle light. David took great trouble over the details in this painting of courtship and physical attraction.  oil painting reproductions for sale

A statue of Venus, goddess of love, is placed on a column at the left, and we also see two wreaths of myrtle, an evergreen sacred to Venus and an emblem of conjugal fidelity. For added, although incorrect, detail in the background, David included four caryatids copied from the Salle des Cent-Suisses in the Louvre. Jose Clemente Orozco Painting Zapatistas

Morris Hirshfield Girl in a Mirror

Girl in a Mirror was painted by Morris Hirshfield in 1940. Hirshfield painted Girl in a Mirror after seeing The Dream (1910), by Henri Rousseau, another self-taught artist, here at The Museum of Modern Art. Hirshfield was greatly influenced by the painting, but he was dissatisfied with Rousseau’s treatment of the female figure, finding its contours overly rounded, and he proposed a different type of nude in response.  Oil painting reproductions for sale

In this work a woman stands facing a mirror that, instead of reflecting the front of her body, shows her back. The symmetry of the doubled body shapes, the highly stylized flowers at the woman’s feet, and the ambiguously rendered interior space, with no clear distinction between wall and floor, work together to form a kind of surface pattern across the canvas. Though Hirshfield did not paint from live models, he was particularly interested in the anatomical details of the female figure and felt his renderings were “better than a camera could do.” This painting can be reproduced by Daydaypaint.com. Henri Rousseau Painting The Dream

The Dream was painted by Henri Rousseau in 1910. Although Rousseau completed more than twenty-five jungle paintings in his career, he never traveled outside France. He instead drew on images of the exotic as it was presented to the urban dweller through popular literature, colonial expositions, and the Paris Zoo. The lush jungle, wild animals, and mysterious horn player featured in this work were inspired by Rousseau’s visits to the city’s natural history museum and Jardin des plantes (a combined zoo and botanical garden).  Oil painting reproductions for sale

Of his visits the artist said, “When I am in these hothouses and see the strange plants from exotic lands, it seems to me that I am entering a dream.” The nude model in this painting reclines on a sofa, mixing the domestic and the exotic. Edward Hopper Paintings Gas

Gas was painted by Edward Hopper in 1940. This work resulted from a composite representation of several gasoline stations seen by the artist. The light in this painting both natural and artificial gives the scene of a gas station and its lone attendant at dusk an underlying sense of drama. But rather than simply depicting a straightforward narrative, Hopper’s aim was “the most exact transcription possible of my most intimate impressions of nature” in this case, the loneliness of an American country road.  Buy famous paintings reproductions online

Fellow artist Charles Burchfield believed these paintings would remain memorable beyond their time, because in his “honest presentation of the American scene… Hopper does not insist upon what the beholder shall feel.” This painting can be reproduced by Daydaypaint.com.
